Sophocles

Sophocles was an ancient Greek playwright. Sophocles is said to be born in Colonus near Athens. His birth is traced to 496 B.C. His father was Sophilus, a rich person of his time.

As we come to know through his writings, Sophocles was highly educated. There might have been many Greek tragedians but Sophocles remains among the few Greek tragedians whose work did not perish.

Some say Sophocles wrote may tragedies but unfortunately not all of his works could reach to the today’s man.

Sophocles is often considered a playwright either a contemporary or later to Aeschylus and Euripides.

Oedipus Rex was written by the great author of his time.

We know Sophocles, primarily, for his plays Oedipus Rex and Antigone; these are the great tragedies of ancient times. Even great Aristotle set the standards of tragedy based on the great writings of such authors.

The most celebrated and debated event of tragedy in modern times is the fate of Oedipus whose tragic flaw seems to have been overridden by the element of predestination. This is the element, most modern playwrights try to undermine.

However, another perplexing debate remains Oedipus Complex which caused many to stir and bring into question the morals of society. However, later on many psychologists proved the theory worth putting in detailed studies for.
